NTBackup FAQ

What's happening with Server 2008?

You've probably heard - NTBackup has been discontinued and will not be included in Windows Server 2008. Microsoft have provided downloadable version of NTBackup that allows you to restore data, but not backup.

Instead, there is a new backup system in Windows Server 2008 based on block-level backup, also known as drive imaging.

An excellent description of how this works can be found here:

We're pleased to announce that BackupAssist supports these new features and adds the same simplicity, scheduling, schemes and reporting to Windows Server 2008 Backup as we've done for NTBackup. BackupAssist also address numerous shortcomings and deficiencies of the in-built backup wizards, as described here:

What about tape drive support for Server 2008?

The in-built drive imaging features in Windows Server 2008 do not work with tape drives. But the good news is that at BackupAssist, we've developed a better, faster method to perform backups to tape for Server '08 users that includes 256-bit AES encryption and automatic file compression! It's called the BackupAssist Zip-To-Tape Add-on. Please click here to find out more!
