Upgrade Protection

What is upgrade protection?

The BackupAssist license purchase is a one-time payment. There are no mandatory maintenance fees or annual renewal fees. You can, however, choose to purchase upgrade protection, which enables you to you receive upgrades to any major version release free of charge. For example, if you have version 4 of BackupAssist installed and version 5 was released you could upgrade to the new version without having to pay any upgrade fee.

We currently offer 12 months of upgrade protection as a free bonus with every new purchase of BackupAssist. In addition, you can choose to add an extra 12 months of upgrade protection to the bonus 12 months you already receive, giving you 24 months of free upgrades to major version releases from the date of your initial purchase.

If your upgrade protection expires BackupAssist will continue to run, but upgrades to major version releases will incur an upgrade fee. Please note that upgrades to new major releases are entirely optional; if you are happy to continue running the version you have installed, that is perfectly fine. If your upgrade protection is about to expire you can renew your subscription in 12-month increments by visiting our purchasing page. If your upgrade protection expires you will need to pay the full upgrade price.

What do you get with upgrade protection?

Minor releases (eg. upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1)

Upgrade protection does not apply to minor release upgrades (ie. an upgrade from v4.0 to v4.1).  Revisions to the software to add a new feature or address a bug that are released as minor upgrades can be downloaded free, even without upgrade protection. It is only major release upgrades that incur an upgrade fee if you do not have a current upgrade protection subscription.
