Migration from version 4 to version 5
Upgrading
We recommend trialling BackupAssist version 5 on a test server before upgrading your production machine. Once you are happy that v5 suits your needs follow these steps to upgrade your production server from BackupAssist v4 to BackupAssist v5:
If you are currently running version 4 of BackupAssist and would like to upgrade to version 5, simply install the latest v5 install from:
http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssist/download.php.
During installation you will be asked whether you would like to copy your v4 settings to v5. Click yes and ‘begin’. BackupAssist will copy across your existing jobs, settings and reports. During the v5 install, BackupAssist v4 will be uninstalled. You can revert to v4 later at any time.
Any sub version of BackupAssist v4 can be upgraded to v5. There is no need to upgrade your version 4 install before switching.
BackupAssist version 4 and BackupAssist version 5 cannot run simultaneously on the same machine.
Licensing
If you purchased a BackupAssist v4 license after October 13th 2007 you may be eligible for a free v5 license. To check whether you are eligible visit http://www.backupassist.com/purchasing/purchase.php and enter your v4 key into the ‘Check your upgrade protection status field’. If your protection has not expired, you can get a free v5 key by clicking the ‘Purchase Now’ link and following the upgrade steps.
Your existing v4 license key will not be transferred automatically to v5, and v5 will run in trial mode for 30 days until you enter a valid v5 key or revert to BackupAssist version 4.
If you are running v4 in trial mode, installing v5 will reset your trial, giving you another 30 days of use.
Reverting to version 4
If you would like to revert to BackupAssist v4 after installing v5:
- Go to control panel > add remove programs and remove BackupAssist version 5. Deselect the option to keep your settings.
- Install version 4. All of your jobs, settings and reports and licensing will be available automatically.
Note that your settings will revert to their pre version 5 state. Any changes made after installing version 5 of BackupAssist will be lost.
Reverting to BackupAssist v4 will not reset your v4 trial. If you were running BackupAssist v4 in trial mode you may find that the trial expired while you were running v5.
