Using the BackupAssist trouble-shooting tools

BackupAssist provides trouble-shooting tools to handle simple tasks quickly and effectively, including resetting the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) database and cleaning up the BackupAssist (BA) Service.

Resetting the RSM database

If you are experiencing problems detecting or backing up to your tape drive, preparing tapes, or slow response times from the RSM it may be the case that your RSM database has become corrupted. If any of these are the case, we recommend that your reset the RSM database and start again with a fresh database that you can load your tapes into. No data will be erased from your tapes during the RSM reset process.

  1. Click Reset RSM in the trouble-shooting tools window to reset and rebuild the RSM database.

Cleaning up the BA service

If your backups are failing to start or appear to be queued to run when not scheduled, we recommend your run the cleanup service process to reset the BackupAssist service. The BackupAssist service is what monitors and controls the scheduling and running of backup jobs. Performing the cleanup can often correct problems with scheduling and job execution.

  1. Click Cleanup service in the trouble-shooting tools window to restart the BackupAssist service.
