BackupAssist and REV Drive Backups on Windows 2000

Windows Backup doesn't natively support writing to the REV drive on Windows 2000. However, there are two options to use BackupAssist with the REV Drive:

1. Backup to a file, and then copy the file over to your REV drive. BackupAssist can do this automatically - please refer to our REV Drive white paper, available from here: http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssist/documentation.php

2. Use the following workaround that was kindly suggested to us by one of our users and resellers.

Backing up directly to the REV drive

I have found an easier solution to the problem that will indeed let you backup directly to the USB REV device in Windows 2000. I have tested both the backup and restore using this method, and it works perfectly.

PROBLEM:

The Microsoft Windows 2000 NTBACKUP utility does not support direct access to the USB REV device.

SOLUTION:

Share the USB REV drive and then map a network drive letter to the shared USB REV drive.

Perform all backup operations to the mapped network drive instead of the physical REV drive.

Note: We have had issues reported with this method including slower backup times to the REV drive and the inability to see files located on the REV drive, when viewing the contents of the share location (the file still exist on the drive, they are just not visible on the share).
