Tape Drives
Supported On: Windows NT 4.0 & later

Data Capacity (uncompressed):
  • Travan (10-20GB)
  • DAT/DDS (12-36GB)
  • AIT (15-200GB)
  • LTO (200-1600GB)
  • DLT/SDLT (40-30GB)
Recommended For: Small Business (DDS3, DDS4, AIT)
Medium Business (LTO, SDLT, AIT)

Advantages Disadvantages
  • Easily store tapes off-site
  • Good for archiving purposes.
  • Proven industry standard.
  • Well supported by Windows.
  • Most good drives offer hardware compression.
  • Tapes can wear out over time and become unusable.
  • Some tape Drives require cleaning / retentioning.
  • Sequential Access (slow).
  • Tape drive unit is often costly.

Iomega REV Drive
Supported On: Windows 2000 & later

Data Capacity (uncompressed): REV Drive Disk (35GB)
Recommended For: Small-Medium Business

Advantages Disadvantages
  • 5-8 times faster than tape
  • REV disks are durable, and last longer than tapes.
  • No cleaning is required.
  • IDE Solution eliminates need for SCSI.
  • Drive provides Random Access.
  • Cheaper than most tapes
  • Tapes can wear out over time and become unusable.
  • Some tape Drives require cleaning / retentioning.
  • Sequential Access (slow).
  • Tape drive unit is often costly.

Removable Hard Drives
Supported On: Windows 2000 & later with appropriate drivers

Data Capacity (uncompressed): Variable: according to capacity of Hard Disk Drive installed - up to 400GB or more
Recommended For: Small-Medium Business

Advantages Disadvantages
  • High Speed transfer of data (USB & FireWire)
  • Portable for transport and can be stored offsite.
  • Large Capacity for data.
  • Cost Effective for single units.
  • Easy Connectivity
  • Size—removable hard drives are bigger than tapes .
  • Less suitable than tapes for media rotation—having multiple hard drives for rotation is expensive and clumsy.

NAS and Network Backups
Supported On: Windows 2000 & later

Data Capacity (uncompressed): Variable: according to capacity of network resource
Recommended For: Small-Medium Business

Advantages Disadvantages
  • Backups are stored externally and can be retrieved in the event of system failure
  • Many servers can be backed up to the same NAS device, allowing for centralized backups.
  • NAS can be located offsite for automatic offsite backups.
  • Scheduled backups cannot complete if network resource is not available/offline.
  • Slow speed: backups take longer than when to a local device (depending on network speed).
  • Media rotation is not possible; NAS must be stored in fireproof and secure location.

Local Hard Drives
Supported On: Windows 2000 & later

Data Capacity (uncompressed): Variable: according to capacity of Hard Disk Drive installed (up to 400GB or more).
Recommended For: Small-Medium Businesses where offsite backup storage isn’t required. Allows for fast restoration of data.

Supported On: Windows 2000 & later, dependent upon packetwriting software

Data Capacity (uncompressed):
  • CD (700MB)
  • DVD(4.7GB-17GB depending upon standard)
Recommended For: Small Businesses where with small, low security data requirements.
