Back up data on user computers?

Postby Cburnham » Sat Jan 20, 2007 5:10 am

:?: I have a simple wireless infrastructure-based network. It has a Windows 2000 Server, but the user's data is kept on their local machines. Currently I have BackupExec on the server with the remote agents installed and it will go via the wireless network to each user's PC and back up their data. However, I am upgrading the user PC's to XP, and my old version of BE does not support XP.

So, I need new backup software for that site that works with both Win2K and XP Pro and, as a nonprofit, I do not have a lot of money to spend.

I would like to install one instance of BackupAssist on my server and have it back up the data located on my user's computers. Is this possible? If so, I am SOLD!

Thank you,

Cathy in Maine

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for your post, this is Andrew from BackupAssist support.

There is no problem using BackupAssist to do what you are wanting to do, in fact it is a fairly common setup among our home network customers.

All you need to do is map a drive to each machine using either the appropriate share for the users data folders or by using an administrative share so that you can backup the entire drive.

If you do decide on purchasing a licence for BackupAssist, please forward us the details of your not-for-profit status and we will send you an invoice at our reduced rate.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Andrew
