Benefits of VM Granular Restore Console?

Postby Rufguy » Wed Jan 20, 2010 12:47 pm

I'm confused by the pricing for the BackupAssist VM Granular Restore Console Addon. It's the same price as the base product. And from what I can tell, all it does is allow you to mount individual VHD to restore individual files from that VHD. How is that any different than restoring the vhd and then mounting it using windows disk management? Guess it's slightly more convenient but for the same price as the base product? Am I missing something? (entirely possible! :D)

I'm wondering this myself. It's rather easy to mount a VHD in disk management or diskpart and restore files. I suppose BackupAssist makes it easier to mount the shadow copies of the VHDs....I think you can do that with the diskshadow utility too, but it's a bit more complicated. The price does seem a tad high considering the base price of the product.

Hi Boden and Rufguy,

It's Stuart here from the BackupAssist team, thanks for your post on our forum.

We’ve priced the add-on as it integrates into the entire suite, and as a package, it is substantially less expensive than the competitors.

You can see a price comparison on Pages 24 to 27 of the following document: http://www.backupassist.com/downloads/p ... Backup.pdf

Our solution, at $723, is substantially less than the two competitors (whose prices are $6,235 and $2,498 for comparable functionality).

The actual benefit of our granular restore console is that you can do the restore from any of the backups available on a backup device (including past backups), and that the console makes it simple to do. There’s quite a bit more than meets the eye when it comes to mounting the VHD through disk management, which most administrators will only encounter when they want to do a restore [the investment will pay back itself when you consider the time taken to figure out the process]. If granular restores are not important, you are of course welcome to simply purchase BackupAssist to handle the standard backup/restore tasks.

If you have anything to add, please reply to my post or send an e-mail directly to support@backupassist.com.
Kind regards,

Stuart Edwards
