Perhaps it was a fire that destroyed the building. Or perhaps it was theft \u2013 your servers and the backup storage device<ins>s<\/ins> simply vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BackupAssist ER kept a copy of your data in the cloud \u2013 safely offsite. So<ins>,<\/ins> there is no panic because your data is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, we can recommend several different options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>On-premise recovery<\/strong>: download your backup data to a <strong>local machine<\/strong>, and then use this backup to either:<ol><li>perform a local VM Instant Boot, or<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>perform a local Bare Metal Recovery.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li><strong>Cloud recovery: <\/strong>Download your backup data to a <strong>cloud machine<\/strong><del>,<\/del> and perform a VM Instant Boot in the cloud.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a local server to recover to, then option 1a is the fastest and most cost-effective way to get running again. It\u2019s very likely that this will be your preferred option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if you don\u2019t have local hardware to recover to? You might be situated in rural Alaska, or the desert in Australia, and it\u2019ll take weeks to get new hardware shipped out. Or maybe your business needs to wait for an insurance payout before it can purchase new hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last option is what we call the Cloud VMDR, or Virtual Machine Disaster Recovery. You can think of it as the <strong>recovery of last resort<\/strong>, because a local recovery is not possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you\u2019ll have at the end of the Cloud VMDR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the process, we assume that all you have are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Your backup data in a cloud storage container. In BackupAssist ER\u2019s \u201cdisk to disk to cloud\u201d terminology, this means you have only the \u201ccloud\u201d backup.<\/li><li>The credentials to access your backup \u2013 i.e. the authentication details, and encryption password.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the process, you\u2019ll have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Your original server<del> is<\/del> running in the cloud<\/li><li>A private network between the cloud and your on-premise network<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019ve recovered from this emergency situation, you can then decide what to do for a permanent solution. As you see in my ER Challenge videos, the backup takes different forms when it\u2019s in different places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n <table style=\"border:none;\">\n  <tbody>\n   <tr>\n    <td style=\"width:30%;border:1px solid white;background:#193a66;color:white;\"><b>Locally<\/b><\/td>\n    <td style=\"border:1px solid white;background:#aed0f4;color:#193a66;\">VHDX files, with one VHDX per volume backed up<\/td>\n   <\/tr>\n   <tr>\n    <td style=\"width:30%;border:1px solid white;background:#193a66;color:white;\"><b>In the cloud<\/b><\/td>\n    <td style=\"border:1px solid white;background:#aed0f4;color:#193a66;\">Blob storage<\/td>\n   <\/tr>\n  <\/tbody>\n <\/table>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of sending the backup to the cloud \u2013 i.e. the bold part of \u201cdisk to <strong>disk to cloud<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 involves a file-based approach where each file in the VHDX is processed and goes through the process of \u201cblobification\u201d \u2013 splitting files into smaller chunks, deduplicating them and applying compression and encryption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means the reverse needs to be done when you want to download a cloud backup, back to a set of local VHDX files. Reconstitution of the VHDX is done file-by-file, to give you a functionally equivalent local backup. In other words, even if your local backup is destroyed, you can simply create another one by downloading the cloud backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you can download the cloud backup to anywhere \u2013 an on-premise machine in your offices or your I.T. provider\u2019s office, or a cloud based machine. That\u2019s why \u201crecover anywhere\u201d is such a strong theme in BackupAssist ER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How-to-do-it-The-Cloud-VMDR\">How to do it \u2013 The Cloud VMDR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the \u201ccheat sheet\u201d version below. The 3 tasks are broken down into individual steps \u2013 and you\u2019ll notice that some steps can be performed concurrently \u2013 you can provision your Hyper-V Host machine while the backup is downloading, for example. I\u2019ve also color coded each step, to show you which task each step belongs to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table>\n <tr>\n  <td style=\"background:#bcbec0;color:#4d4d4f;font-size:18pt;padding:10px 30px 10px 30px;border:none;\">1<\/td>\n  <td style=\"background:#e8e9ea;color:#4d4d4f;border:none;\">\n   <b>Provision the \u201cbackup downloader\u201d VM<\/b> \u2013 a Cloud VM that will download your cloud data from blobs of data, into a VHDX file. As you provision this VM, you should:\n   <ul>\n   <li>Use a powerful machine for this \u2013 I recommend a D16 or D32 machine. Yes it will be expensive, but you only need this power during the download itself.<\/li>\n   <li>Attach a separate SSD to the \u201cbackup downloader\u201d VM. Do not download it to the C:\\ of your VM \u2013 not only is it small (just 128GB), but it means you cannot detach the disk later. I attached that separate SSD as the V:\\ in the video.<\/li>\n   <li>If possible, use a machine that\u2019s in the same region as your data storage (blob storage).<\/li><\/ul><\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n<table>\n <tr>\n  <td style=\"background:#bcbec0;color:#4d4d4f;font-size:18pt;padding:10px 30px 10px 30px;border:none;\">2<\/td>\n  <td style=\"background:#e8e9ea;color:#4d4d4f;border:none;\"><b>Download and install BackupAssist ER onto this VM, and start downloading your cloud backup.<\/b>\n  <ul>\n<li>Download the software from the backupassist.com website<\/li>\n<li>Click on \u201cRecover &#8211; Available Backups\u201d > \u201cLocate a backup\u201d<\/li> \n<li>c)\tEnter your cloud credentials to connect to your cloud backup, and then click the \u201cDownload\u201d button to download it. I downloaded it to V:\\ in the video.<\/li>\n<li>Start the download, and verify that it has commenced.<\/li><\/ul><\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<table>\n<tr>\n  <td style=\"background:#99ce91;color:#23a00d;font-size:18pt;padding:10px 30px 10px 30px;border:none;\">3<\/td>\n  <td style=\"background:#dbf2d7;color:#23a00d;border:none;\"><b>Provision the Hyper-V Host machine in the cloud.<\/b> (You can do this while the backup is downloading to save time.) This is the host that will run your recovered machine from the backup VHDX files. Some recommendations are:\n  <ul>\n<li>Use a machine that is comparable to your original. There are so many options available, but I found it easiest to stick to the General Purpose options, and choose based on vCPUs and RAM.<\/li>\n<li>After provisioning the VM, you\u2019ll need to install the Hyper-V role, so that the machine can act as a host.<\/li> \n<li>At this stage, you may also want to set up a private network connection between your on-premise network and the cloud machine. We include some resources below that describe this.<\/li><\/ul><\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<table>\n<tr>\n  <td style=\"background:#bcbec0;color:#4d4d4f;font-size:18pt;padding:10px 30px 10px 30px;border:none;\">4<\/td>\n  <td style=\"background:#e8e9ea;color:#4d4d4f;border:none;\"><b>Wait for your backup to completely download.<\/b>\n  <ul>\n<li>Time to get a coffee. Depending on the size of the data, this could take several hours. However, in light of the magnitude of the disaster you\u2019re facing (natural disaster, fire, theft), downloading the backup can be done in the background while other matters are dealt with.<\/li>\n<li>After completion, navigate to your disk (for me, the V:\\) to make sure the backup is present.<\/li><\/ul><\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n<table>\n<tr>\n  <td style=\"background:#bcbec0;color:#4d4d4f;font-size:18pt;padding:10px 30px 10px 30px;border:none;\">5<\/td>\n  <td style=\"background:#e8e9ea;color:#4d4d4f;border:none;\"><b>Shut down your \u201cbackup downloader\u201d VM, and delete it.<\/b>\n  <ul>\n<li>After the backup has been downloaded, you don\u2019t need the powerful machine anymore. Configure networking as appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Start button<\/li><\/ul><\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"My-experiences-and-observations\">My experiences and observations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I came into this challenge as a \u201cnewbie\u201d. As a Microsoft Azure novice, it took me a little while to understand the concept of accounts, subscriptions, resource groups, and so on. But after a while, I figured it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annoyingly, I discovered bugs in the Microsoft Azure console. As I did some practice runs, recording my screen, on two occasions I set up cloud VMs and the VM that Azure created had differing specifications compared to what I selected \u2013 once with the Virtual Machine Type, and once with the attached hard disk. (When I order a Big Mac, I expect a Big Mac, not a salad!) I verified on the screen recording that I had correctly specified my option, but Azure simply messed up. I recommend that after you set up your VM, before you hit the final \u201cCreate\u201d button, you review each screen of options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to do the recovery three times to figure out the most efficient way of doing it. The first time, I thought I\u2019d do it as \u201ccheaply\u201d as possible \u2013 using a 2 vCPU machine, for example. It turned out that the cloud download was taking a long time \u2013 there was simply a limitation in the number of files that could be reconstituted at one time. After some discussion with the developers, I quickly realized that the number of vCPUs mattered. (My eventual recommendation is to use a 16 or 32 vCPU machine.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, I recommend that when you create VMs to do the Cloud VMDR, create them in the same region as your blob storage. This will save you costs \u2013 I found I was not charged for bandwidth. (More about that below.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Performance-analysis\">Performance analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the video walk-through, I chose a 64 vCPU machine. This managed to download the backup in 35 minutes. I did another run subsequently using an 8 vCPU machine, and that took 1hr 15mins. I didn\u2019t know it at the time, but there is a point where more vCPUs won\u2019t necessarily give better performance, because I suspect there\u2019s a limiting bottleneck in the maximum rate of file creation inside the VHDX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I currently suspect that the sweet spot is either a 16 vCPU or 32 vCPU machine. This machine existed for less than one hour.<\/li><li>Data disk \u2013 this is where we download the backup to. It was created and connected to the Downloader VM, and then was transferred to the Hyper-V Host. This disk will need to be connected for as long as the recovered machine runs in the cloud.<\/li><li>Hyper-V Host VM \u2013 this is the cost of the Virtual Machine (per hour) for the VM (compute) and the OS disk. This cost is incurred for as long as the recovered machine runs in the cloud.<\/li><li>Blob storage \u2013 Hot Read Operations \u2013 the full backup was read from blob storage, incurring read costs.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You will note that there were no bandwidth charges. This is because the blob storage and VM are located in the same Region. (n.b. To be more accurate, Microsoft states that there are no bandwidth charges within an availability zone. However, it seems like an excellent option to have available. The Cloud VMDR was quite doable, even for an Azure novice like me. Most of the time of my Cloud VMDR was spent provisioning Azure machines, and waiting for the backup to download onto the Azure machine. Using BackupAssist ER was a small minority of the overall task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design of the Cloud VMDR also means it\u2019s possible to \u201crecover anywhere\u201d \u2013 for example, back up to AWS and recover to Azure, or back up to Azure and recover to GCP. Multi-cloud ability can be important to satisfy legislative requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it\u2019s also useful to discuss where the Cloud VMDR sits in the marketplace. The thing that strikes me is that it\u2019s very cost effective. The most expensive part of cloud services is VM compute, whereas blob storage is cheap. The brilliant thing about the BackupAssist ER design is that for all the time you\u2019re not running a recovery in the cloud \u2013 which should be 99.5% of the time \u2013 you only pay for cheap storage, not expensive compute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, there are a number of \u201cBusiness Continuity\u201d solutions that provide the ability to perform a recovery in the cloud. Their solution may be a little faster to get that machine running in the cloud (usually because they use a proprietary appliance for the local backup, and a proprietary cloud for the recovery). However, these solutions also cost many thousands of dollars per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BackupAssist ER solution delivers the benefit of recovery in the cloud, but without the 24\/7 billing model of the alternative solutions. That\u2019s just smart business and compelling value for the majority of SMEs, Government departments, NGOs and schools that need flexible recovery options that won\u2019t break the
