{"id":19230,"date":"2023-06-27T03:03:04","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T03:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/?p=19230"},"modified":"2026-04-03T09:40:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T09:40:44","slug":"how-to-keep-backupassist-365-working-through-microsofts-2023-security-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/how-to-keep-backupassist-365-working-through-microsofts-2023-security-changes","title":{"rendered":"How to keep BackupAssist 365 working through Microsoft&#8217;s 2023 security changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TL;DR summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The latest release of BackupAssist 365 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/365\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download here<\/a>&nbsp;or in the MBC) will work despite Microsoft\u2019s latest security changes.&nbsp;<\/li><li>However, we recommend you delay upgrading until you need to &#8211; read on for more info.<\/li><li>If you\u2019re running an old OS, you\u2019ll also have to update your versions of the .NET framework, PowerShell, and a few other things \u2013 details below.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The background&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/exchange-team-blog\/deprecation-of-remote-powershell-in-exchange-online-re-enabling\/ba-p\/3779692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deprecation of Remote PowerShell in Exchange Online<\/a>, we expect that older versions of BackupAssist 365 (before v1.17.1) will eventually cease to work once Microsoft completes the rollout of these changes to all tenants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the latest releases of BackupAssist 365 (v1.17.1 and later) have transitioned to use a new API to maintain integration with Exchange Online. This ensures that our software will continue to be functional in the face of Microsoft\u2019s security updates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should I do now?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are currently using an older version of BackupAssist 365, you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Upgrade to the latest available version at the time, and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Reauthenticate your mailbox backup jobs &#8211; this will grant BA365 permissions to use the new API.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our technical support team. We are here to help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mandatory updates on your client machine, in the name of security&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to upgrading BackupAssist 365, there are now higher minimum requirements to continue connecting to Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online.&nbsp;If your client computer (the one running BackupAssist 365) doesn&#8217;t meet these prerequisites, Microsoft will deny connection attempts to Microsoft 365.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This affects older operating systems (such as Server 2012 family) the most. But it\u2019s a good idea to double check your installations anyway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a list of prerequisites:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Microsoft .NET framework 4.7.2 or later (<a href=\"https:\/\/dotnet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/dotnet-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download here<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/li><li>PowerShell 5.1 or later (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=54616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download here<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Visual C++ 2015 redistributable (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-au\/download\/details.aspx?id=48145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download here<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any issues, please click the \u201cGet support\u201d button in BackupAssist 365 and submit a ticket. Linus holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and has held Microsoft Certified Solution Developer and Sun Certified Java Programmer credentials. More recently, he has completed digital forensics and cyber-security courses through the Black Hat Conference. He has spoken on information security and cryptography at Infosecurity Europe, addressed politicians and policymakers at Australian Parliament House, presented to SMB IT administrators at the IT Pro Experts Conference, and served as a guest lecturer to Cyber Security master's students at the University of Melbourne.
