This means you do not need to source and install new hardware. You just create a VM on your host server and recover the physical server\u2019s operating system, applications and data onto the virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4204 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3.png\" alt=\"p2v-article3\" width=\"1890\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3.png 1890w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3-768x216.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/p2v-article3-1024x288.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1890px) 100vw, 1890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>BackupAssist P2V recovery steps<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the steps required to perform a P2V recovery using BackupAssist and Microsoft Hyper-V.<\/p>\n<h3>Recovery Requirements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">A Microsoft Hyper-V Server<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">A BackupAssist System Protection bare-metal backup. If this backup is on a USB drive, you will need to share the USB drive when it is attached to the Hyper-V Server.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">A bootable RecoverAssist media. The bootable media cannot be on a USB device. This is due to USB pass through limitations with Hyper-V.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following steps explain how to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/backup\/system-protection.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">System Protection<\/a> bare-metal backup, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/recover\/recover-tab.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RecoverAssist <\/a>bootable media, to recover a physical server on a Windows Hyper-V guest.<\/p>\n<h3>Create a Hyper-V guest<\/h3>\n<p>1. Open the <em>Hyper-V Manager<\/em> console on your Hyper-V Server.<\/p>\n<p>2. Select <em>New Virtual Machine<\/em>, from the action menu.<\/p>\n<p>3. Allocate memory to the VM, and click next.<\/p>\n<p>4. Configure the network adapter for the VM, and click next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The memory and network settings will vary from system to system.<\/p>\n<p>5. Create a new virtual hard drive and click next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Make sure the size of the virtual drive is equal to or greater than the size of the hard disk that the backup was made of.<\/p>\n<p>6. Select, <em>Install an operating system from a boot CD\/DVD-ROM<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>7. Click Next and Finish.<\/p>\n<p>If you receive the following error, \u201cAn internal error occurred\u201d or \u201cthe network path was not found\u2019, the following solution may help. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/support\/how-to-restore-a-server-2008-image-backup-to-a-new-hyper-v-vm-from-nas\">http:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/support\/how-to-restore-a-server-2008-image-backup-to-a-new-hyper-v-vm-from-nas<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Perform a recovery on the new Hyper-V guest<\/h3>\n<p>8. Using the Hyper-V Manager, right click the virtual machine and select <em>Connect\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>9. Insert the bootable RecoverAssist media and configure the guest to use it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>For a bootable ISO media: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">a) Use the <em>Media<\/em> menu to select <em>Insert Disk\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">b) Browse to the ISO file and select it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image1b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image1b.png\" alt=\"article3-image1b\" width=\"653\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image1b.png 653w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image1b-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>For a bootable optical media<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">a) Use the Hyper-V Manager\u2019s <em>Hardware<\/em> menu to select the optical drive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">b) Configure the guest\u2019s <em>Settings<\/em> to capture the host\u2019s optical disk drive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image2b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4242 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image2b.png\" alt=\"article3-image2b\" width=\"736\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image2b.png 736w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/10\/article3-image2b-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>10. Select the <em>Start<\/em> icon at the top of the guest (VM) menu. This will boot the Hyper-V guest.<\/p>\n<p>11. During the guest\u2019s start-up, select the space bar to boot from the attached media.<\/p>\n<p>12. RecoverAssist will boot the VM and load the RecoverAssist menu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The first three options in the RecoverAssist menu are used to select the location of the backup.<\/p>\n<p>13. Select the backup location type, and provide the backup location information when prompted.<\/p>\n<p>14. Once the backup has been located, select Finish.<\/p>\n<p>15.
