{"id":485,"date":"2011-04-06T20:18:11","date_gmt":"2011-04-06T20:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/?p=485"},"modified":"2019-11-13T08:20:19","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T08:20:19","slug":"blue-screen-of-death-issues-when-running-nod32-anti-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/blue-screen-of-death-issues-when-running-nod32-anti-virus","title":{"rendered":"Blue Screen of Death issues when running NOD32 Anti-Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span>IMPORTANT<\/span><\/strong>: <strong>Updated information available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/support\/835\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hi everyone,<\/p>\n<p>The BackupAssist help desk has had several reports of various Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors occurring either during or around the scheduled time of backup.<\/p>\n<p>The known causes of a small number of these errors are directly related to BackupAssist, which are issues that our development team is working hard at resolving.<\/p>\n<p>We have recently discovered, with the help of some of our Resellers, that one of these BSOD issues is caused by a process called <strong>ekrn.exe<\/strong>, which belongs to the NOD32 Anti-virus application.<\/p>\n<p>We discovered this by debugging the crash dump file that is generated by Windows whenever a BSOD error occurs. The default location of the crash dump file is <strong>%SystemRoot%\\MEMORY.DMP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examining a crash dump basically involves the following:<\/p>\n<p>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Download and install the Windows debugging tools from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/whdc\/devtools\/debugging\/installx86.mspx\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Open <strong>WinDbg <\/strong>from the Start Menu &gt; Programs &gt; Windows Debugging Tools<\/p>\n<p>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Go to File &gt; Open Crash Dump and locate the relevant Crash Dump File<\/p>\n<p>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Enter<strong> !analyze -v<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For full instructions on how to examine a crash dump file refer to the following Microsoft Technet article: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/deploymentguys\/archive\/2008\/08\/01\/working-with-crashdumps-debugger-101.aspx\">http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/deploymentguys\/archive\/2008\/08\/01\/working-with-crashdumps-debugger-101.aspx<\/a>. We have attempted to try and stop the NOD32 services with a script, however even running as a domain administrator we receive \u2018Access is denied\u2019 errors. Upon researching this further, stopping the service seems to be quite a common issue experienced by NOD32 users.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Our reseller has confirmed that fully uninstalling NOD32 on his system that the BSOD errors relating to this have ceased.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We do apologize for any inconvenience to those users which are experiencing BSOD issues.
