In this article, we look at how to restore a single guest.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Important considerations<\/h2>\n<p>When you create a backup job to back up Hyper-V guests, it is important that the guests are selected under the <em>Microsoft Hyper-V VSS<\/em> section of the backup job&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Selections<\/em> screen. This ensures that both the VHD and the required configuration (XML) files are backed up.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not select the guests using the <em>Hyper-V Server\u2019s VSS <\/em>section, BackupAssist will not be able to restore the guest and the VSS writer will not be able to make an application-consistent backup of the guest and any VSS applications inside it.<\/p>\n<p>For a best practice guest backups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">The VHD and configuration files of all guests to be backed up should be on the same volume.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">That volume should only contain data that is to be backed up.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">You should back up the whole volume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5104 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-1\" width=\"1287\" height=\"694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11.png 1287w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11-768x414.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-11-1024x552.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1287px) 100vw, 1287px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: You can restore a guest without using its configuration file(s) by creating a new guest and using a backup of a guest\u2019s VHD. However, you still need to configure the backup job correctly using the <em>Hyper-V Server\u2019s VSS <\/em>section so that the backup is application-consistent.<\/p>\n<p>For details, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/support\/the-key-to-hyper-v-guest-backups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyper-V guest backup article<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Methods for Restoring a Hyper-V guest<\/h2>\n<p>There are two methods used to restore a guest .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restoring the guest to its original location<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This method will use the BackupAssist Restore Console to overwrite the existing guest and replace it with the restored guest.<\/p>\n<p>Important &#8211; The existing guest will shut down if a restore starts. We recommend that you shut down the guest manually before the restore starts, to ensure a clean shut down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restoring the guest to another location<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This method will use the BackupAssist Restore Console to restore the Hyper-V guest to another location. The restored VHD file can&nbsp;then be used to create a new guest.<\/p>\n<p>This method can be used if you do not want to overwrite an existing guest, or if you want to restore the guest to another Hyper-V Server.<\/p>\n<h2>How to restore a Hyper-V virtual machine<\/h2>\n<p>To restore a Hyper-V virtual machine using BackupAssist 10 and later, see our current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/restore\/hyper-v-server-restore.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyper-V restore guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This section explains how to restore a Hyper-V guest.<\/p>\n<p>To restore a Hyper-V guest:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Open BackupAssist and select the <em>Restore <\/em>tab<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Select <em>Hyper-V.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will open a list of all Hyper-V backups created on this server. There will be an option to restore the full guest using the Restore Console. If you have the Exchange Granular Restore (EGR) Add-on, you will also have the option to restore files from within the guest using EGR.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Select the&nbsp;<em>Restore Console<\/em> button next to the backup containing the guest that you want to restore.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5105 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-2\" width=\"1158\" height=\"692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2.png 1158w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-2-1024x612.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1158px) 100vw, 1158px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Restore Console will open.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Use the <em>Browse<\/em> tab to select the backup.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <em>Browse<\/em> tab\u2019s calendar to select the date that you want to restore from.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5108 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-3\" width=\"1057\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31.png 1057w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31-768x485.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-31-1024x647.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1057px) 100vw, 1057px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Put a tick next to the guest machine that you want to restore.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Select Restore and a new dialog will open.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px\"><strong>If you are restoring the guest to its original location<\/strong> &#8211; ensure that the <em>Restore to <\/em>field displays <em>Original location<\/em>, and that the&nbsp;<em>Restore options <\/em>field displays <em>Overwrite existing files.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\"><strong>If you are restoring the guest to a different server <\/strong>to the server it was backed up from, or wanting to restore the VHD to create another guest on the same server- use the <em>Restore to <\/em>field to specify the location that you want the VHD file to be restored to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Select Restore<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-41.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5109 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-41.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-4\" width=\"963\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-41.png 963w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-41-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-41-768x345.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\">Once the restore has been completed, proceed as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px\"><strong>If you are restoring the guest to its original location,<\/strong> you will now need to open the Hyper-V Manager and start the guest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5110 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-5\" width=\"1150\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5.png 1150w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5-768x264.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-5-1024x353.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px\"><strong>If you\u2019re using the restored VHD to create a new guest<\/strong>, you can now create the new guest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-61.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5115 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-61.png\" alt=\"guest-restore-6\" width=\"701\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-61.png 701w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/guest-restore-61-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the <em>Connect Virtual Hard Disk<\/em> step, you can use the restored VHD to create the new guest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: We recommended configuring the guests so that their VHD and configuration files are on the same volume.
