Now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/program\/thermal-management-technologies\">DARPA<\/a> is looking at making chips that have water run <em>through<\/em> your CPU. It&#8217;s called Microfluidic Cooling, and it may be the future.<\/p>\n<p>Think that&#8217;s amazing? It&#8217;s already proven to\u00a0dissipate five times the heat flux <em>found on the surface of the sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Microfluidic Cooling: The Future of Microprocessors?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6728\" style=\"width: 626px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/ICECool_619_3161.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/ICECool_619_3161.png\" alt=\"Microfludic Cooling of chip.\" width=\"636\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/ICECool_619_3161.png 619w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/ICECool_619_3161-300x153.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Water Based:<\/strong> There&#8217;s no tubes on this water-cooled device.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The early tests are extremely promising.<\/strong> Microfluidic Cooling has proven to cause a four to five times drop in heat levels, compared to a chip of the same size.\u00a0And anyone who&#8217;s run a high-powered rig knows exactly how monumental a heat drop like that is.<\/p>\n<p>If you can manage the heat, you can use fewer chips and material, which makes it cheaper, lighter and more compact. If you kept it the same size, you&#8217;d vastly increase the processing power while still keeping it cool.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the heat flux generated by today&#8217;s microprocessors is loosely comparable to that on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/computer-engineering-feeling-the-heat-1.11993\">sun&#8217;s surface<\/a>. But unlike the sun, the devices must be cooled to temperatures lower than 1oo\u00b0C to function properly.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lockheedmartin.com\/us\/innovations\/030716-webt-ice-cool-darpa.html\">thermal demonstration chip<\/a> was made to demonstrate this technology. It was able to dissipate heat\u00a0flux up to five times this level,\u00a0showcasing the technology&#8217;s amazing potential.<\/p>\n<h2>DARPA:\u00a0The Internet Was Our First Hat Trick<\/h2>\n<p>This breakthrough in Microfluidic Cooling is currently being run by a DARPA program called ICECool Applications.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right. Not only is the technology incredibly cool, so is the name of the folks making it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6727\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/1457444302022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/1457444302022.jpg\" alt=\"Microfluidic Cooling test run\" width=\"628\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/1457444302022.jpg 935w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/1457444302022-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/1457444302022-768x370.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>This microcooler contains less than a drop of water but can chill even the hottest of electronic chips.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Much like the beginnings of the internet (which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_Internet#Inspiration\">DARPA was heavily involved in<\/a>), the main focus of this experiment is to reduce the thermal limitations on military electronic systems, &#8220;while significantly reducing size, weight and power consumption (SWaP).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry that you&#8217;ll never get your hands on it. What&#8217;s the airflow like?\u00a0Make sure your cooling fans are in the best locations possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eliminate Clutter:<\/strong> This will optimize airflow and circulation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep Room Temperature below\u00a077\u00b0F \/ 25\u00b0<i>C<\/i>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Get Rid Of Gaps:<\/strong> If there are empty spaces in your server racks, use blanking pannels to fill them. Racks with empty spaces reduce airflow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Built In Cooling:<\/strong> Consider a rack enclosure with a built-in cooling system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature Monitoring:<\/strong> Employ a solution to monitor the server room temperature.
