{"id":9541,"date":"2017-10-10T09:07:01","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T22:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/?p=9541"},"modified":"2019-11-19T02:51:15","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T02:51:15","slug":"how-to-set-up-cryptosafeguard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/blog\/how-to-set-up-cryptosafeguard","title":{"rendered":"How to Set up CryptoSafeGuard"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is CryptoSafeGuard?&nbsp;A Quick Summary.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/backupassist\/features\/cryptosafeguard.php\">CryptoSafeGuard<\/a> consists of two distinct components that protect your backups from ransomware.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>CryptoSafeGuard Detector<\/strong>, which prevents infected files from being backed up.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>CryptoSafeGuard Shield<\/strong>, which protects your existing backups from ransomware.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This article looks at how to set up CryptoSafeGuard so that you get the best results from these two components.<\/p>\n<h2>Adding CryptoSafeGuard<\/h2>\n<p>CryptoSafeGuard is available for all BackupAssist users who have BackupAssist 10.1 or later and an active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/backupassist\/features\/backupcare.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BackupCare<\/a> subscription.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not sure if your BackupCare has expired?<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/purchase\/renew\/\">Click here<\/a> to check&nbsp;and\/or renew your subscription. To upgrade to BackupAssist 10.1,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/download.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a>&nbsp;and go to the Upgrade\/Update tab.<\/p>\n<h2>Enabling CryptoSafeGuard<\/h2>\n<p>The next thing to&nbsp;do is check that you have CryptoSafeGuard is enabled.<\/p>\n<p>To check and enable CryptoSafeGuard:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open BackupAssist.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <em>Settings&nbsp;<\/em>tab.<\/li>\n<li>Select&nbsp;<em>CryptoSafeGuard.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Check that there is a tick by <em>Enable CryptoSafeGuard protection<\/em>. Tick the box if it is not ticked.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE: If the tick box is greyed out, it means that you do not have an active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/backupassist\/features\/backupcare.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BackupCare subscription<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-settings2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9549\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-settings2.png\" alt=\"csg-settings\" width=\"610\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-settings2.png 580w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-settings2-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">CryptoSafeGuard will show as enabled on your Backup tab\u2019s Home screen (As shown below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-button.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-button.png\" alt=\"csg-button\" width=\"415\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-button.png 415w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-button-300x99.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CryptoSafeGuard will also show as enabled in your backup reports.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9547 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-report.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1133\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-report.png 1133w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-report-300x85.png 300w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-report-768x218.png 768w, https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/csg-report-1024x291.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1133px) 100vw, 1133px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Setting up notifications<\/h2>\n<p>With CryptoSafeGuard added and enabled, you now need to enable SMS notifications. These notifications send an alert to a mobile number if&nbsp;CryptoSafeGuard detects a possible ransomware infection. Set up SMS notifications in&nbsp;the same dialog used to enable CryptoSafeGuard. As you can see in the Settings screen shot above, all you need to do is enter the phone number into the field provided.<\/p>\n<p>Type the phone number in the <strong>SMS Number<\/strong> field using the standard international phone number format \u201c+&lt;country code&gt;&lt;mobile phone number&gt;\u201d.&nbsp; The SMS test button will become active once a phone number has been entered in the correct format.<\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Test<\/strong> and a test message will be sent to that phone.<\/p>\n<p>If you have set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/settings\/email-server-settings.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Email server settings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/settings\/email-address-list.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Email address list<\/a>, and enabled Notifications in the backup job, the emailed backup report will also inform you of a possible ransomware detection.<\/p>\n<h2>Securing your backup destination<\/h2>\n<p>The CryptoSafeGuard Shield protects your backups from ransomware by only allowing BackupAssist to create, delete or update data in your backups. This means if the BackupAssist machine is infected, the ransomware cannot corrupt or delete your backups. However, if the backups are on a NAS or network share, you need to ensure that all other computers cannot access your backup destination, as they could potentially spread an infection to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: Only your BackupAssist computer should have access to the folder containing your backups.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure that this is the case, you should use Windows permissions to restrict access to the folder containing your backups. Ideally, only the Backup User Identity (the Windows account used to run your BackupAssist) should be able to access your backups. So take the time to check that only machines running BackupAssist and CryptoSafeGuard have access to the folders that the backups are in, and those folders only allow access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/backupassist\/settings\/backup-user-identity.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backup User Identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Test CryptoSafeGuard with your backup jobs<\/h2>\n<p>CryptoSafeGuard runs when each backup job starts and checks the files you&#8217;re backing up to see if they exhibit characteristics commonly associated with files encrypted by ransomware. For example, mangled file names or malformed files. It also checks for the mathematical properties of encrypted files. The process errs on the side of caution, so CryptoSafeGuard may raise alerts for files that are not infected.<\/p>\n<p>This is more likely to occur the first time you run a backup job with CryptoSafeGuard. For this reason, you should do a test run of the backup jobs to see if any safe files are flagged by CryptoSafeGuard &#8211; so you can whitelist them.<\/p>\n<p>See our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backupassist.com\/support\/en\/references\/ransomware-protection.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CryptoSafeGuard guide<\/a> to learn how to review and whitelist files.<\/p>\n<h2>What next?<\/h2>\n<p>CryptoSafeGuard detects signs of a ransomware infection and protects your backups from being impacted by a ransomware infection. It does not protect the actual system from ransomware, or remove ransomware.
