Automatic migration tool: migrating version 3 settings to version 4

The automatic migration tool

If you are currently running version 3 of BackupAssist and want to upgrade to version 4, you can use the automatic migration tool to transfer version 3 job settings to version 4. This eliminates the hassle of having to re-create existing version 3 backup jobs in version 4. Not all settings can be migrated to version 4 using this tool so you may need to manually edit jobs once the migration is complete. You will be notified of which settings could not be preserved from version 3.

You must be running version 3.5.3 of BackupAssist in order to migrate version 3 settings. You will be prompted during the migration process if you are running an earlier version of BackupAssist. If you are not running v3.5.3:

  1. Download and run the v3.5.3 upgrader: http://www.backupassist.com/downloads/BAUG-3_5_3.exe

Please note: only BackupAssist v4.0.11 and later includes the automatic migration tool; the tool is also only compatible with 32-bit operating systems.

Migrating version 3 settings
  1. If you have both version 3 and version 4 (4.0.10 or older) installed (if not, skip to step 2):
    1. If version 4 has been activated with a license you should deactivate the license by going to Help > Licensing.
    2. Uninstall version 4 of BackupAssist from your machine:
      Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    3. Uncheck "Please keep all of my jobs, reports and other settings" during the uninstall process.
  2. Download the latest version 4 Full Install:
    http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssist/download.php
  3. Run setup.exe and follow the prompts to install version 4. Check Launch BackupAssist v4 at the last step.
  4. BackupAssist should detect the installation of version 3 and alert you. Click Yes to run the migration wizard.
  5. Follow the prompts and click Begin migration during the Migrate step. Version 3 settings are then migrated to version 4:
  6. Click Next once the migration has completed. You will then be presented with a report outlining the result of the migration together with a checklist of settings that either could not be migrated or require your attention. It is recommended that you click Print checklist at the top of the window and review each item in the list.
  7. Click Finish to launch version 4. Click Jobs at the top of the window to view all jobs that were migrated from version 3:
  8. Select a job and click Edit at the bottom of the window to view the job's settings. All job settings in version 4, except those listed in the migration report/checklist, should correspond with the job settings in version 3 (example below):
