Changes to backup selections in BackupAssist v6.2.2

In BackupAssist v6.2.2, which was released in late April 2011, we made changes to the way files are selected for backup. Instead of selecting the individual files, applications and other system resources you want to back up, you are now asked to specify the type of recovery you want to be able to perform with your backup: Bare Metal, System State and data, Automated System Recovery (NTBackup only) or Data only.

Once you choose a recovery type, BackupAssist will automatically select the files or volumes that need to be backed up to enable that type of recovery. You can still make your own custom selections in addition to those automatically enforced, but the recovery type you choose will determine what must be backed up.

After upgrading your installation of BackupAssist to version 6.2.2, if you have any Windows Imaging jobs scheduled, you may receive a warning to notify you that jobs may not be configured for bare metal disaster recovery. Windows Imaging fix in BackupAssist v6.2.2.

The BackupAssist v6.2.2 release addresses an issue affecting some users running Windows Imaging backups. This issue applies to users running Windows Imaging backups on machines with hidden system partitions, which include machines where Windows has been installed on a GPT disk, as well as a limited number of OEM systems (e.g. IBM Blade Servers).

Even if this issue affects you, you will still be able to restore files, volumes and applications from your image backup; no data is lost. To restore your entire system, however, you would need to manually reinstall Windows and then restore from your image backup.

You can read more about this fix in the following blog post.

Tips and Tricks

Manually transferring the public key to an Rsync Destination
for secure authentication.

When backing up with Rsync over an SSH connection using BackupAssist, a public/private authentication key pair is created, which is used to make a secure connection to the Rsync Server. If you experience an authentication error when connecting to your Rsync Server it may be because BackupAssist was unable to transfer the public key to the Rsync destination. This article outlines how you can resolve this issue by transferring the public key to the Rsync Server manually. Click here to read it.

Incremental backups with BackupAssist on newer Operating Systems.

With the removal of NTBackup from Server 2008, incremental backups are now configured in different ways on newer operating systems like Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 and 2008 R2, depending on the type of backup engine you are using. This Tips and Tricks article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of performing incremental backups and outlines the different methods BackupAssist uses to run incremental and incremental-like backups.
