Description
During a backup or verify of data that is on a network drive, the network drive has stopped responding.
This is typically due to either the remote computer crashing, hanging, pausing, or the network connection dropping out. Extremely high volumes of network traffic or high CPU loads may cause this to happen.
This error is an indication of a fault or shortcoming of the network setup, not your backup software.
Resolution
If this problem is a predictable and repeatable problem then it is likely that there is a scheduled task or conflict with your backup.
For example, if your backups constantly fail at around 3am, and also at around that time there is high network activity caused by a FTP operation on your network, then this is the likely culprit.
Another example would be an antivirus program scanning your entire hard drive at a given time - which can cause your hard drives to slow and for timeouts to occur. Additionally, some security software may disable network connectivity during times where it considers security to be at its most vulnerable - for example, when patches or upgrades are running.
Running automatic Windows Updates is also known to cause this problem, because when an update is complete, the computer will often reboot and cause any network connections to be disconnected.
Also ensure that your networking hardware, as well as your servers, is UPS protected. Often a momentary power outage will cause routers to reboot and/or be placed in a hung state.
If you are unable to resolve the problems, then it is recommended that you backup your data locally, and use the features in BackupAssist to copy the data to a remote location if required. (Use the Local Directory destination, and set up a "Copy to" destination, or use the NAS destination with a Local Cache of backups).
With any NAS issues, you should also check that the NAS drivers and firmware are up to date. The drivers and firmware will be available from your NAS vendor.
