BackupAssist v4 and later

Description

The Exchange Server could not be contacted when exporting mailboxes.

There are several causes of this problem:

  1. Your backup user does not have privileges to query the Active Directory
  2. Your backup user does not have administrator privileges on your Exchange Server
  3. Your backup user is not on the same domain as the Exchange Server
  4. Your Exchange Server or Domain Controller is down, or there is a networking problem

Resolution

Please follow this checklist and ensure that every point is covered:

  1. Ensure that your backup user has privileges to query the Active Directory. Typically, if your backup user is part of the Domain Admins group, it will work. However, if you wish to customize your domain for security purposes, then you will need to ensure that your backup user has privileges to query the Active Directory and Exchange Server using LDAP.
  2. Ensure that your backup user has the rights to perform Exchange Administrative Tasks. A detailed How-To is provided here in the KB article BA1754 Exchange Server administrative privileges are required to export mailboxes reliably.
  3. Ensure that your backup user is on the same domain as your Exchange Server. We recommend a simple setup where you backup your Exchange Server from a computer within the same domain. While it is possible to backup across domains, and advanced administrators will be able to set it up, we do not officially provide techncial support for this scenario due to the increased number of complications that may arise.
  4. Please ensure that your Exchange Server and Domain Controller are running, that your DNS entries are correct, that firewalls have been correctly setup to avoid potential problems, etc.
