BackupAssist v4 and later

Description

Windows reports that your tape drive does not support retensioning - and hence BackupAssist cannot retension your tape.

Retensioning is a process of winding your tape fully forward and then fully backward, to ensure that your tape is under the appropriate amount of tension.

This process is only required for older types of tape drives that have a single spindle. Not all tape drives support retensioning.

Based on our discussions with tape drive manufacturers, we believe only Travan tape drives require (or support) retensioning. However, these types of tape drive are virtually obsolete.

Resolution

If you receive this error message, it means that your tape drive reports that it does not support the Retension command in Windows.

The advice we have received from manufacturers indicates that it is unnecessary to retension modern tapes such as LTO, SDLT, DLT and AIT.

However, if your tape drive manufacturer has provided a tape retension program with the tape drive, you may script it to run after each backup. Please follow this procedure:

  1. Uncheck the "Eject after backup" check box in the Tape Drive Options section (Under your Backup Job, go to the "Destination" tab). This ensures that your tape is not ejected before your retension program runs.
  2. In the Scripts tab, under "Run after each backup", insert a command to run your tape retension program.
