Resolution
The error's known causes and resolutions are described below.
Known Cause 1 - The VSS writer experienced a partial failure.
This can occur when there is an issue with one of the components within VSS. To troubleshoot the error, you will need to learn more about what caused it by checking the component level error state and by checking the Event Viewer.
Check the component level error state
Check the component level error state by running the following command from a command-line interface: vssadmin list writers
This will list the VSS writers present on your system. Look for any VSS writers that are displayed with errors as this will indicate what part of the snapshot caused the error.
Check the Event Viewer
Open Event Viewer by clicking on Start > Run > Eventvwr and check if there were any specific VSS or SPP warnings or errors generated by the system during the backup process.
The specific logs to check:
- Backup logs: Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Backup
- If running Hyper-V then check Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Hyper-V-VMMS.
These event logs should provide a detailed description of what may have caused the error.
