Rsync internal error

BackupAssist

For BackupAssist v9.2.1 and later

Description

This error is generated when backing up certain network shares using an rsync backup, which then causes an error within the Cygwin libraries (directly related to the rsync protocol).

It has been identified in a lot of instances that the network share causing the fault is a hidden / administration share (represented by a '$' sign in the path).

Resolution

There are 4 possible resolutions

Resolution 1 - Avoid backing up network shares.

Avoid backing up network shares. This may involve running the backup locally on the machine the files are hosted on.

Resolution 2 - Update any firmware on the Rsync server

Update any firmware on your Rsync server (typically a NAS device) in case the device is running an older version of rsync that contains the known bug. If you’re backing up to an online storage provider (Amazon Web Services, rsync.net, etc.) then contact their support indicating what the issue is.

Resolution 3 - Upgrade to the latest cwRsync Server software

If you are running cwRsync on a Windows machine, upgrade to the latest cwRsync Server software. You will need to pay for this as cwRsync is no longer free.

Resolution 4 – Make a File Protection backup of the files to the machine BackupAssist is installed on

Create a File Protection backup to write the files from the network shares you’re backing up to a local folder on the machine BackupAssist is installed on. You can then back up this local copy of the files to avoid the error as the job is no longer referencing any network shares.
