Description
This error can be reported by System Protection, File Protection and File Archiving backup jobs.
The error will occur when the backup job needs to use the Volume Shadow Copy Service (also known as VSS) but cannot- because the service is disabled.
Resolution
Resolution 1
Enable the "Volume Shadow Copy" service in the system Services applet (located in Administrative Tools).
Resolution 2
If you are creating a File Protection or File Archiving backup and do not want to use the VSS service, you can stop the error message from occurring by disabling the VSS option within the backup job. This option is ON by default.
It can be turned OFF as follows:
- Edit the job in the Jobs tab's, Manage menu
- Go to the "Open files" section
- Untick the option "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service".
The danger of not using VSS is that backup may include files which are not in a consistent state.
