Description

This error usually indicates that you are trying to back up to a store/drive that is smaller than the total size of the backup itself.

Resolution

This error usually indicates that you are trying to back up to a store/drive that is smaller than the total size of the backup itself.

There are 3 possible resolutions for this problem

Resolution 1 - Check the amount of free space on your backup destination

There may be insufficient space in the location you are trying to back up to. If there is not enough space, you could delete some files at the backup destination to make room for this backup and future backups. Alternatively, you may need to use a larger destination. If you use a tape media or RDX disks, you might want to split the backup into two separate jobs.

Resolution 2 - If you are using rsync - check the firewall and SSH connection settings

This error has been known to occur due to connection issues with SSH when using Rsync. It has also been noted that this type of error may occur due to firewall or SSH connection related issues.

Try connecting through a third party SSH tool such as Putty to see if a connection can be made.
You can download Putty from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html.

If there is an issue connecting to the destination, it should be investigated as it is probably causing the error to occur.

Resolution 3 - Backing up to a QNAP brand NAS

Make sure you are not backing up to the 10Mb RAM drive that exists on QNAP brand devices. If you are, change the backup destination to the user directory instead.

In the backup job's Destination setting, the path on server setting must start with /share/.
For example, to setup a job to write to the Public folder, the path will be defined as /share/Public.
The folder names are also case sensitive. Be sure you enter the folder name exactly as defined on the QNAP device.

If you have this error, you should reboot the QNAP device as it can become unresponsive after writing to the wrong directory.
