BackupAssist Version 6 and newer

Description

BackupAssist uses Microsoft VSS writers and the VSS service. This error can occur when other applications such as anti-virus software or other backup tools/jobs access the VSS writers or disk space that BackupAssist is trying to access.

Resolution

Look for applications (besides BackupAssist) that could be attempting to access the same volume that the backup process is attempting to back up.

Possibilities include:

  • Anti-virus software
  • Windows UAC
  • Other backup software
  • Two backup jobs set to backup the same drive at the same time in BackupAssist. (BackupAssist only supports 1 backup job running at a time)

Once you're able to stop the conflicting process that is accessing the volume, re-run the backup job.
