BackupAssist eNews - March 2011
Linus Chang Cortex I.T. CEO

Hi all, and welcome to the March 2011 edition of the BackupAssist eNews. We have excellent news: BackupAssist v6.2.1, which includes a number of important fixes, is now available! This release is strongly recommended for all version 6 users.

This month's eNews includes an article about an upcoming changes to the way backup selections will be made in BackupAssist. Instead of selecting the individual files, applications and other system resources that you want to back up, you will specify the type of recovery you want to be able to perform from your backup, which determines the volumes or files that need to be backed up. Please read the full article later in this edition of the eNews for the full story.

Read this month's Tips and Tricks article for information about the new tape append feature introduced in BackupAssist v6.2.0, including recommendations about how and when to use it.

I'd also like to make a warm welcome to two new staff that have joined our Helpdesk team in Australia: Tim Nyaanga and Martin Liu. With Tim and Martin's help we'll be able to continue providing you with excellent customer service and technical support.

Also, don't forget to check out what Dönald Trùmp, BackupAssist's new biggest fan, has to say about our software in our Just for fun section.

Regards,

Linus Chang, Cortex I.T. CEO

Articles and Whitepapers

Upcoming changes to the way backup selections are made in BackupAssist.

In an upcoming release of BackupAssist, version 6.2.2, which is due to be released in late April 2011, we will be making some changes to the way files are selected for backup. Instead of selecting the individual files, applications and other system resources you want to back up, you will be asked to specify the type of recovery you want to be able to perform with your backup: Bare Metal, System State and data, or data only.

Once a recovery type is chosen, BackupAssist will automatically select the files or volumes that need to be backed up. For example, if you want to be able to perform a Bare Metal Recovery from your Windows Imaging backup, BackupAssist will make sure that all the critical Windows volumes are selected. You can still make your own custom selections in addition to those automatically enforced, but the recovery type you choose will determine what must be backed up.

If you have any feedback about this change, please email us at support@backupassist.com - we'd love to hear from you.

Brien Posey's review of BackupAssist Hyper-V backup and restore.

In his review, Brien Posey, a technical writer for VirtualizationAdmin.com, discusses the difficulties associated with backing up Hyper-V Servers and Guest VMs and evaluates BackupAssist's Hyper-V backup and restore capabilities.

"In my opinion, BackupAssist is a must-have for small and medium businesses. Server virtualization has traditionally complicated disaster recovery, but this product cuts through that complexity and makes restoration a breeze."

Tips and Tricks

Appending multiple backups to tape using the BackupAssist Zip Engine.

In addition to the many features offered in the BackupAssist Zip Engine, such as compression and AES-256 encryption, you can now append multiple backups to the same tape. In previous versions of BackupAssist, a Zip backup would always overwrite existing data on your tape. The ability to append multiple backups to tape was added in BackupAssist v6.2.0, giving you even more flexibility when it comes to devising a backup strategy. You can read about this new feature here.

Steps to follow before contacting BackupAssist Support.

BackupAssist v4's End of Life is official.

Backup anecdotes

Last month we didn't receive a submission for our backup anecdotes section, so we've included a story from Guy Thomas's computerperformance.co.uk website. If you have an amusing experience you'd like to share with us please visit BackupAssist Backup Anecdotes.

The timid backup operator.

Many disasters have their root cause in human relationship problems. The manager ordered a box of backup tapes and showed the timid backup operator how to load the tape into the DAT drive. On Monday, the backup performed perfectly. However, on Tuesday the operator could not remove Monday's tape. So, being shy but resourceful, she unscrewed the Tipp-Ex bottle and painted over Monday's date and then wrote Tuesday's date on the label.

This unauthorized procedure went on for months, with the layer of Tipp-Ex getting thicker and thicker. You can guess what happened next when the boss wanted to recover a mailstore from the tape backup. Unfortunately, all that was on the tape was yesterday's differential backup. When he looked in the box, he saw 11 tapes still in their cellophane wrappers. As for the last full backup, there was none. Woops. The sad point of that case was that each party blamed the other, and could not admit their part in the fiasco.
