BackupAssist

BackupAssist Version 3 or later.

Description

BackupAssist was not able to connect to the tape drive installed on your machine.

Resolution

Try performing a small backup using NTBackup (Start > Run > ntbackup).

If NTbackup does not work, follow the steps within our tape drive troubleshooting white paper, available online here: https://www.backupassist.com/education/tapeDriveManagement.html, ensuring that no additional third party backup software products are currently installed.

Certain other backup software products overwrite the drivers for your tape drive. Even when these programs are removed from the system, the drivers may still remain. BackupAssist and NTBackup use the default Windows drivers for communication with your tape drive. Please ensure that the Windows drivers are installed for your tape drive.

If NTBackup works, make a note of the Backup Destination listed in the bottom left hand corner of NTBackup and make sure that it matches exactly with the media pool entry in the Destination tab of BackupAssist. If the problem persists disable/uncheck all of the advanced tape drive settings within the Destination tab of BackupAssist. Try running the backup again with these options disabled.

It's also been found that having insufficient permissions for your Backup User Identity can cause this error to appear.

Check that your Backup User Identity has been set and has the required access. To view your current Backup User Identity, select the Settings tab > Backup User Identity and you'll see the following dialogue box appear.

Backup User Identity

Note: For BackupAssist 10.4.2 and earlier, the Backup User Identity is used for all backup jobs and the account may have been created with custom access levels. For 10.4.3 and later, a Backup User Identity is only required for Jobs that have a NAS destination or the SQL add-on, and in these cases, the Backup User Identity should be a member of the Administrators group.

What to check

  • For BackupAssist 10.4.2 or earlier - check that the account is still selected, enabled and has the required access.
  • For BackupAssist 10.4.3 and later, check that the account is still selected, enabled and a member of the administrators group.
  • To check the permissions properly, you can log into the backup server using the Backup User Identity account and check that you can read and write to the backup destination without any authentication requests or errors.
  • If backup account's password is changed in Windows, it will need to be changed in BackupAssist.
