How to Backup Exchange Server 2007

Summary: BackupAssist offers two ways of backing up Exchange Server 2007, depending on if you?re running it on Server 2003 or Server 2008.

BackupAssist also comes with a plug-in into Windows Server Backup that makes it Exchange aware and capable of properly backing up Exchange Server 2007. This overcomes the limitation that Windows Server Backup is natively not Exchange aware.

BackupAssist gives you two options for backing up your entire Exchange Server, depending on which OS your Exchange Server is running on.

Exchange 2007 running on Server 2008, EBS 2008 or SBS 2008:

  1. Perform your Exchange backup using Windows Server Backup.
  2. In BackupAssist, set up a “Windows Imaging” job, and select the volumes that contain your system data and Exchange data.
  3. When the backup runs, BackupAssist will automatically detect if Exchange Server 2007 is installed, and if installed, it will perform the consistency checks and log file truncation required to correctly backup Exchange Server. This is shown in the Backup Report.
  4. The restore procedures are fully integrated with the Windows Server Backup restore UI.

Exchange 2007 running on Server 2003 or SBS 2003:

  1. Perform your Exchange Information Store backup using NTBackup.
  2. In BackupAssist, set up an “NTBackup” job, and under the Exchange tab, select the servers you wish to back up.
  3. When the job runs, BackupAssist tells NTBackup to backup Exchange using the legacy streaming method.
  4. Use NTBackup to restore your server
