Microsoft “Important” update for SBS 2011 and SharePoint 2010 Issue

Hi all,

We have recently noted an issue relating to Microsoft SharePoint 2010. This issue may also occur if you are running Windows SBS 2011 as SharePoint 2010 is included with this operating system.

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) was recently released through a Microsoft Update (KB2510766). On a default installation, Windows SBS 2011 Standard administrators should be able to see it in the SBS Console and would need to approve it for installation before it is offered for installation on the server.

Updating SharePoint 2010 is now a 2-step process. Without completing the second step that involves running the PSCONFIG command, you may experience SharePoint search failures and backups of the server on which SharePoint is installed will fail.

The backup failures may include one of the following error messages:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check “VSS” and “SPP” application event logs for more information.

ERROR – A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x80042336)

The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.

Or

BackupAssist may report a BA2510 Unable to obtain volume information error along with the following details:

Sharepoint 2010 Issue

A vssadmin list writers command will list the following vss writer as having failed:

Writer name: ‘SPSearch4 VSS Writer’
Writer Id: {35500004-0201-0000-0000-000000000000}
Writer Instance Id: {ffdde2b3-5175-466b-87f7-3973278c7fbe}
State: [8] Failed
Last error: Inconsistent shadow copy

Please refer to the following article for instructions on how to perform the second part of the SharePoint update:
