SBS 2008 – Exchange log truncation

UPDATE: Exchange 2007 backup on Server 2008 is now possible thanks to a plug-in released with BackupAssist v5.2. Find out more.

Hi all,

A follow-up to my previous blog about SBS 2008 imaging backups and Exchange 2007. In v5.1.1 and prior, the Exchange logs do not get truncated because BackupAssist was performing a VSS copy backup. So while your Exchange backups are definitely valid, it doesn’t appear that the backups are being performed because the logs weren’t being truncated.

We altered this behaviour in v5.1.2 – so all backups are by default VSS full backups, meaning that the logs do get truncated. You can change it back to VSS copy backups by going to the advanced options tab and under the “VSS Backup Mode” setting, choose “Copy” instead of “Full”

Enjoy,

Linus
