BA613: Insufficient space to create or grow Shadow Copy Storage Area

Error code Product Applies to
BA613 BackupAssist For BackupAssist Classic v12 and later.

Description

This error occurs when there is insufficient VSS storage available to create the VSS snapshot for the volumes involved in backup. Here are several causes:

If required, this is the standard Edit backup job text

  1. The most obvious cause of this is insufficient free disk space on the volume which is being backed up, but it could also be due to heavy load on the system.
  2. A very common scenario is when hidden system partitions are incorrectly configured, as is possible after certain Windows OS upgrades.
  3. It is also possible to see this issue if shadow storage associations have been changed to points to different volumes where the storage allocation is insufficient.
  4. This issue may also occur if the volume is larger than the 64TB (the maximum which Microsoft VSS supports).

Resolution

Check the shadow storages sizes by executing "vssadmin list shadowstorage". After that ensure that the shadow storages are all of a sufficient size by freeing space on the volumes or by redirecting the shadow storage to other volumes which have sufficient free space by executing "vssadmin add shadowstorage" command. Note that Windows Backup does not support VSS storage for a volume being stored on a different volume.
