BA8207: One or more files/directories failed verification

Error code Product Applies to
BA8207 BackupAssist For BackupAssist Classic v12 and later.

Description

During a test restore, BackupAssist verifies the backed-up files against the backup. BA8207 means one or more specific files or directories failed that verification. The details section of the report lists exactly which items failed and the reason for each.

Common causes:

  • A genuine read problem - access-permission or disk I/O errors on the backup destination.
  • Files whose names contain Unicode or multi-byte characters that were silently excluded by the File Archiving (Zip) engine; these are reported as "File not found in the backup" at verification.
  • Intermittent false positives on System Protection test restores, where the listed files are in fact restorable and a re-run succeeds.

Note: on an encrypted backup destination, if the failure was caused by the destination disk being resized or otherwise altered while the test restore was running, BackupAssist reports BA8210 instead of BA8207. On a non-encrypted destination that same external change is not detected separately and may instead be reported here as BA8207.

Resolution

Review the files listed in the details section and check whether they can be restored manually. Re-run the verification to confirm whether it was an intermittent failure, and run chkdsk to check for disk errors on the destination. If specific files consistently fail - especially files with non-English names in a File Archiving job - generate diagnostics and contact support.

To contact BackupAssist Technical Support and provide diagnostic information:

  1. Open BackupAssist.
  2. Select Help from the menu at the top of the BackupAssist console.
  3. Select Contact Support ... from the drop-down menu. This will open the BackupAssist - Support dialog.
  4. Enter the details in the fields provided.
  5. Make sure the Submit system diagnostics to help with your query tick box is checked. This will zip your BackupAssist settings so technical support can review these specifically for your environment.
  6. Select Send.

BackupAssist technical support will review your message and diagnostics, and contact you to help resolve the problem.
