Description

The timeout period is the time BackupAssist will wait before it terminates the backup process - with the assumption that the process has stalled and is not likely to recover.

Resolution

Resolution 1 - Insufficient timeout period

You may experience this error if the timeout period in BackupAssist is set too low, particularly if you are backing up a large amount of data, or your destination device is slow.

To extend your timeout period, edit your job and select NTBackup options. Under the Backup execution and timing section, increase the timeout period.

Resolution 2 - Popups

If you have turned off the option to click on popup windows that halt the backup process (found in NTBackup options > Advanced NTBackup options), your backup might be stalling because a popup is appearing during the backup that requires your attention. If that popup is not dealt with, the backup process will stall and eventually timeout.

Resolution 3 - SQL maintenance tasks

It has been reported that a conflict with BackupAssist backing up to a particular folder while maintenance tasks were being performed by the SQL Enterprise Manager on several databases has caused timeout errors to occur. By changing the time of the SQL maintenance task forward one hour, and changing the backup time back one hour the issue was resolved.
