Mailbox Protection reached end of life on 28 February 2017 and is not part of BackupAssist v10 and later. This article applies to BackupAssist v9 and earlier, which no longer receive technical support. See Software end of life.

Description¶
This error is related directly to the user running the backup job and it's mailbox on the Exchange server.
Resolution¶
Resolution 1¶
Make sure the user running the backup has a mailbox within Exchange and the following permission levels:
Exchange Administration rights
A valid mailbox within the Exchange server being backed up
To create a mailbox in Exchange 2007,visit the following link: http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/exchange2007/exchange2007_create_mailbox.htm
To set permissions for the user running the backup in Active Directory:
- Open Active Directory.
- Find the User Account from the list provided within Active Directory.
- Right Click the user and select Properties.
- Click the 'Member of' tab to see the groups that user is a part of.
- Click the 'Add' button to grant further permissions.
- Search for the group you wish to add the user to and then click 'Check Names'.
- This will now give you the group (if it's valid), and then click 'Ok'.
This should now have added the user to the group that you selected, also granting the permissions that go along with that group.
Resolution 2¶
Make sure that 'Hide mailbox from Exchange Address lists' is not checked for the user running the backup mailbox.
To check this please follow the steps below:
To check this setting within Exchange 2007, open the Exchange Management Console and browse to Recipient Configuration > Mailbox and right click on the users mailbox and select Properties.
Once on the Properties window, select the General tab and at the bottom make sure 'Hide from Exchange Address List' is un-ticked (as below):
