Error code Product Applies to
BA1892 BackupAssist BackupAssist v5.3 onward

Description

This error is caused by a network connectivity issue between the server performing the mail export and the Exchange server. Commonly, this occurs when both the Exchange server and the exporting server use IPv6 for TCP communication and the Exchange server is not running Exchange 2007 SP1 and/or does not have Update Roll up 5 for Exchange Server 2007 (Microsoft KB 941421).

This error will also be generated if you are running the Client Access Server (CAS) role within Exchange 2010 on a system which is different to that of the Mailbox role and not specified it correctly within you mailbox export backup in BackupAssist.

Resolution

Resolution 1 - Make sure system is fully updated.

Begin by checking that your Exchange server is up-to-date with the latest service pack. A list is available updates is available at:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee221180(EXCHG.80).aspx

After applying the latest updates, check to see if you backup job will now complete successfully.

Resolution 2 - Change Hosts File

If you continue to see BA1892 after applying the latest service pack and applicable updates to your Exchange server, you will need to add an entry in your exporting server's host file. To do this follow these steps:

  1. Open the following file using a text editor, such as notepad
    \%systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

  2. Create an entry in the following format for you Exchange server's static IPv4 address
    and machine name:

    [IPv4 address] [machinename]

Examples of entries in this file are: 192.168.1.230 sbs2008-dev

The IP address you enter will need to match the IP address given by running'nslookup [machine name]'within a command prompt window.

  3. Then, from an elevated command prompt window on the exporting server run:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Resolution 3 - Exchange 2010 and Client Access Server (CAS) Role

If you're running the CAS role on a different machine to that of the Mailbox role in Exchange 2010, you'll need to specify this within your mailbox backup job in BackupAssist.
You will need to have BackupAssist v6.3 or later installed to be able to back up your mailboxes correctly in this type of configuration. Review the documentation on our website regarding CAS for further information on configuring your backup correctly.
If you're unsure that your Exchange configuration involves the CAS and Mailbox roles being located on separate machines, you can check this by checking the Exchange Management Console > Microsoft Exchange On-Premises > Server Configuration
