BA2527: Unable to catalogue backup due to an unspecified error

Error code Product Applies to
BA2527 BackupAssist BackupAssist v6 and later

Description

BackupAssist creates catalog files after the backup process has completed. This warning typically occurs because of an issue with mounting the VHD file created by the imaging process. The result is that the backup job cannot fully catalog the file.

You may find that this is a once-off error which may not reoccur, so it is recommended that you only try the resolution if you see this error more than once.

Resolution

Enable Quick Catalog

The Quick Catalog option prevents the backup VHD from mounting after the backup, as this is the most common reason for this warning to occur. This means when you attempt to perform a restore, the backup's VHD will be mounted at the start of the restore process, not during it.

To enable Quick Catalog:

  1. Open BackupAssist.
  2. Select Manage Backup Jobs.
  3. Select the backup job.
  4. Select Edit from the top menu.
  5. Select Imaging Options from the options on the left.
  6. Tick the check box next to Quick Catalog

Manage : Imaging options

Note: enabling Quick catalogue speeds up cataloguing, but a Quick catalogue does not produce the full file catalogue that a test restore needs. If this job also runs a test restore, you may then see BA8209 ("Unable to verify because Quick catalogue is turned on") at verification time. If you rely on test restores for this job, weigh that trade-off, or turn Quick catalogue off again once this cataloguing problem is resolved.
