BA4930: Unable to complete catalogue by using MFT for HV

Error code Product Applies to
BA4930 BackupAssist For BackupAssist 15.0.0 or later.

Description

Unable to complete catalogue creation by using MFT parser for the Hyper-V guest. .

Resolution

When cataloguing a Hyper-V guest, BackupAssist reads the guest volume's Master File Table (MFT) directly for speed. This warning means the guest's MFT could not be read reliably, usually because of minor NTFS inconsistencies inside the guest volume.

From within the Hyper-V guest, at an elevated command prompt, run a check-disk on the affected volume - for the volume with drive letter X, run "chkdsk X: /f". Note that "chkdsk /f" needs exclusive access and dismounts the volume; on the guest's system volume it runs at the next restart of the guest, so schedule it outside backup and production hours. Re-run the backup once the guest volume is clean.

Resolution 2 - Disable MFT parsing for Hyper-V guests (advanced, with guidance from technical support)

If the guest volume cannot be repaired, Support may direct you to have BackupAssist use the slower legacy traverser for Hyper-V guests. This is controlled by a registry value (DisableMFTParsingForHyperVGuests) on the BackupAssist host, under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Cortex I.T\BackupAssist\v{major}; contact Support before changing it.
