BA4940: An error occurred while running the backup verification

Error code Product Applies to
BA4940 BackupAssist BackupAssist v8 or later.

Description

BA4940 is a fallback condition that BackupAssist reports when an unexpected, unhandled error occurs while running a backup verification (test restore) job. It means the verification could not be completed because of an error that BackupAssist did not otherwise recognise. It does not necessarily mean the backup itself is bad – only that the automated verification could not finish.

Resolution

Because BA4940 indicates an unexpected error rather than a specific fault, the most reliable way to confirm whether your data is safe is to verify the backup yourself with a normal (manual) restore.

Perform a manual restore of a selection of files from the backup that reported this error. For the steps, see Files & Apps tab.

  • If the manual restore succeeds, your backup data is intact and recoverable. The problem was limited to the automated verification (test restore), not to the backup itself.
  • If the manual restore also fails, continue troubleshooting that restore problem, as the backup may genuinely be unreadable.

Step 2 – Report the error to BackupAssist

BA4940 is raised only during a test restore and represents an unhandled error in the verification process, so it should be reported so we can investigate. Please contact support with your backup report and diagnostics - BackupAssist Support page.
