BA8210: Verification aborted: the backup volume was externally altered during the operation

Error code Product Applies to
BA8210 BackupAssist For BackupAssist 15.0.5 or later.

Description

When a System Protection test restore is running, BackupAssist mounts the backup's VHDX file and verifies the files inside it. For an encrypted backup destination, BackupAssist also monitors the encrypted volume's backing storage during verification. If that storage becomes permanently unreachable while the test restore is running - for example because the disk hosting the destination was shrunk, resized, or otherwise structurally altered in Windows Disk Management or a hypervisor console, which invalidates the open file handles on the volume - BackupAssist stops verification immediately and records BA8210.

This detection currently applies to encrypted backup destinations. On a non-encrypted destination the same external change is not detected this way, and the individual file read failures it causes may instead be reported as BA8207. Where BA8210 is raised it makes the real cause visible - the disk was altered externally, not the backup - and the individual file errors (BA8207) are suppressed.

Resolution

If a disk operation was performed during the test restore, re-run it to confirm the backup data is intact:

  1. Open BackupAssist. The job list is shown in the Overview.
  2. Select the test restore job and click Run.
  3. Allow the test restore to complete without performing any disk operations on the destination.
  4. If the test restore completes without BA8210, the backup data is intact and the issue is resolved.

Resolution 2 - Avoid disk operations during test restore

Do not resize, shrink, extend, or otherwise modify the disk hosting the backup destination while a test restore is running. Schedule any disk maintenance outside the test restore window.

Resolution 3 - Check for automated disk management tools

Some hypervisors and storage appliances perform automatic disk optimisation, thin-provisioning reclamation, or volume resizing. Check whether any such tools are scheduled to run at the same time as the test restore job, and adjust their schedules to avoid overlap.

Note on the test restore report

When BA8210 is recorded, individual file verification errors (BA8207) are suppressed in the report. Those file errors are a consequence of the aborted operation, not genuine backup data corruption. Re-run the test restore with no concurrent disk operations to confirm the backup is intact.
